We Are Called

In the Catholic Church, the deacon stands as a living example of Christ-centered service. Ordained for a ministry of charity, the deacon’s role encompasses serving the poor, assisting in liturgical functions, and proclaiming the Gospel. By their very vocation, deacons embody the call to serve with a heart of love, a heart of Christ. This example sets the stage for all Catholics to embrace a life dedicated to selfless service.

Jesus’ entire ministry was characterized by service. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and comforted the sorrowful. In John 13:14-15, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, saying, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” This act of humility and love underscores the Christian call to serve others.

The Catholic Church teaches that service is a path to holiness. By serving others, we imitate Christ and grow in our spiritual life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2447) states, “The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities.” These works of mercy, both corporal and spiritual, guide us to serve others with compassion and empathy.

To serve with a heart of love means to act with genuine concern for the well-being of others. It requires us to look beyond ourselves and our needs, focusing on the needs of those around us. This love is not a mere emotion but a deliberate choice to care for and support others. St. Teresa of Calcutta, a paragon of service, often said, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” Her life exemplifies how simple acts of kindness, performed with love, can make a profound impact.

A heart of Christ in service is a heart that is willing to sacrifice and suffer for others. It is a heart that reflects the unconditional love of Jesus. This heart is patient, kind, and forgiving, always ready to extend a helping hand. In serving with a heart of Christ, we are called to be Christ to others, embodying His love and mercy in our actions.

Practical Steps to Serve

1. Identify Needs: Look around in your community, parish, or workplace to identify those in need. It could be the lonely neighbor, the struggling single parent, or the homeless person on the street.

2. Act with Compassion: Approach service with empathy and compassion. Listen to others’ stories and understand their struggles.

3. Involve Your Family: Encourage your family to participate in acts of service. Serving together strengthens family bonds and instills values of compassion and generosity in children.

4. Volunteer: Offer your time and talents to local charities, shelters, or church programs. Consistent involvement can make a significant difference.

5. Pray for Guidance: Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your service. Prayer keeps your heart aligned with God’s will and renews your strength. Service, grounded in a heart of love and modeled after the heart of Christ, is a powerful way to live out our faith.

As Catholics, we are called to be beacons of love and compassion in a world often marked by indifference and selfishness. By embracing a life of service, we not only fulfill the Gospel mandate but also become true witnesses of Christ’s love, making a lasting impact on the lives of others. Let us strive to serve with humility, dedication, and a heart that mirrors the boundless love of our Savior.

Blessings, Deacon Mike
